Avellana was the eldest child of Jose Hontiveros and Vicenta Ruiz Pardo. She blazed a trail as one of the first graduates of the University of Santo Tomas Graduate School, earning her Master of Arts (MA) in English. Together, they co-founded the Barangay Theater Guild (BTG) in 1939, a pioneering collective that breathed life into Filipino theater.
