Manansala was not only a painter but also a bridge between contrasting worlds. His art seamlessly connected the city and the suburbs, rural and cosmopolitan life. His paintings captured a nation in transition, influenced by the arrival of American culture.

His artistic journey began at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts. His formative years laid the foundation for his later exploration of cubism and abstraction.

Manansala developed a unique style known as "transparent cubism". In this technique, he masterfully superimposed delicate tones, shapes, and patterns of figures and environments.  His composition titled "Kalabaw" (Carabao) exemplifies this technique, where layers of form and meaning intertwine.
