One such story is that of Nieves Fernandez, a schoolteacher whose quiet life in Tacloban City, was forever changed when war reached her shores.

Born around 1906, Nieves Fernandez led a peaceful life as an educator and entrepreneur. Her world was disrupted when the Imperial Japanese forces occupied the Philippine Islands during World War II. As the Japanese began their harsh regime, including robbery and rape, Fernandez's protective instincts were awakened - not just for herself, but for her community.

Refusing to be a silent victim, Fernandez transformed from a dedicated teacher to a fierce guerrilla leader. Barefoot and armed with little more than homemade weapons and a relentless spirit, she began recruiting native men to resist the occupiers.
