Gloria was one of twelve children born to lawyer Jaime Diaz and model and socialite Teresa Aspillera. Her family's background in the limelight paved the way for her and her sister, Rio Diaz, also an actress and beauty queen, to pursue careers in the public eye.

Diaz's journey to the Miss Universe crown was nothing short of remarkable. She entered and won Binibining Pilipinas 1969, which led her to the international stage in Miami Beach, Florida. Her wit charmed the world during the final question round, where she was asked about "men in the moon," leaving an indelible mark on the pageant's history. Her victory was so celebrated that it was even communicated to the Apollo 11 crew members during their historic space mission.
