The origins of Juan Ponce Enrile are rooted in the social and economic disparities of the northern Philippines in the early 1900s. He was born on <time datetime="1924-02-14">February 14, 1924</time>, in the town of Gonzaga, Cagayan. At birth, he was named <b>Juanito Furagganan</b>, taking the surname of his mother, <b>Petra Furagganan</b>. His father, <b>Alfonso Ponce Enrile</b>, was a powerful lawyer and politician from Baliuag, Bulacan, who was practicing in Cagayan at the time. Because Alfonso was already married to another woman, Juanito was born out of wedlock, a status that significantly shaped his early access to resources and social standing.

While official government records mark his birth in 1924, there are historical discrepancies that suggest he might have been older. Records from the Philippine Independent Church, also known as the Aglipayan church, show that he was baptized as Juanito Furagganan and record his birth as <time datetime="1922-06-22">June 22, 1922</time>. His son, Jack, shared this information in 2025, noting that in the 1920s, birth registration in rural areas like Cagayan was often inconsistent due to widespread poverty and lack of formal administrative infrastructure. Regardless of the exact year, Enrile's early years were defined by hardship. He grew up in Barrio Mission, now known as Barangay Casitan, living by the river with his mother and six half-siblings. As the head of the Insurance Commission, Enrile introduced amendments to the rules and regulations that stabilized the industry and made it more transparent. However, during the 1986 People Power Revolution, Enrile admitted that the ambush had been staged to give Marcos a reason to sign the proclamation. During the martial law era, Enrile was one of the most powerful people in the Philippines. He signed the Arrest, Search, and Seizure Orders (ASSOs) that allowed the military to detain political opponents and activists without a warrant. He served as the Chairman of the Philippine Coconut Authority, where he and Danding Cojuangco controlled the coconut levy funds and the copra industry.
