Early Life and Transformation

Kumander Liwayway was born in Mexico, Pampanga in 1919. Her father, Basilio Gomez, served as the vice mayor of Mexico. As a teenager, she had a flair for fashion, creating dresses and perfumes, and even participating in local beauty pageants. However, her life took a dramatic turn during World War II when Japan invaded the Philippines.

Her father led a resistance movement against the Japanese occupiers, resulting in his brutal torture and execution. His lifeless body was publicly displayed as a grim warning. 
</p>

The Huk Rebellion and Rise to Command
</h4>

Motivated by her father's tragic death and his unwavering resistance against the Japanese, Kumander Liwayway became part of the Hukbalahap (Hukbo ng Bayan Laban sa Hapon or People's Anti-Japanese Army), a guerrilla movement operating near Mount Arayat. The guerrilla fighters honored her with the name "Liwayway",  signifying the dawn of a new era. Rather than surrendering to oppression, she embraced the path of combat and resilience.
