Early Life and Education
</h4>
<p>
Born in 1552 to a noble family in Carrión de los Condes, Spain, Benavides entered the Dominican Order in San Pablo de la Moraleja, Valladolid. He distinguished himself for his great talent and capacity for theology, as well as for his attitude as a Dominican religious. He later moved to the University College of San Gregorio, in the same city of Valladolid, to perfect his studies of Philosophy and Theology.

Journey to the East
</h4>
<p>
In 1587, Benavides joined the first group of Dominicans going to Manila, proceeding with them on to China where he hoped to expand the local Catholic church. He was later exiled, and established a hospital for the Chinese in Binondo, Manila, before becoming the head of his order.
