Derije even caught some of the university's employees playing online games.


The USM president said he has directed the university's head of the Information Communications Technology Center (ICTC) to check the opening of the sites as most of the times this affects the speed of their local area network (LAN) connection.


Derije said he has no choice but to issue the order since chatting through Facebook and other social networking sites during office hours affect ‘production’ or output of the employees and lessen the number of hours of their professional work.


The latest order has hurt many employees and said it was unfair since most of the times, they use the internet to do some research for their reports, subject classes, and others.


For them, the latest trend in learning and teaching is through the internet.


“This is what we call, E-learning, meaning, using modern technology to advance the learning and education,” said one of the members of the USM faculty.


The USM, one of the country’s largest state universities in Mindanao, has now a student population of more than 8,000 and has a faculty and non-teaching staff of over 1,600.
