In the mid-1960s, Southeast Asia was widely described by geopolitical analysts as the "Balkans of Asia" - a volatile theater plagued by post-colonial instability, ideological rivalries, and internal insurgencies:

Earlier attempts at regional integration had failed to take root. The <strong>Association of Southeast Asia (ASA)</strong>, formed in 1961 by Malaya, the Philippines, and Thailand, was paralyzed by the Sabah dispute. Similarly, <strong>Maphilindo</strong> (Malaya, the Philippines, and Indonesia), proposed in 1963 as a confederation of Malay-heritage nations, collapsed almost immediately due to <em>Konfrontasi</em>.

Following the political transition in Indonesia in 1966 - which brought General Suharto to power and ended Sukarno's confrontational policy - Thai Foreign Minister <strong>Thanat Khoman</strong> seized the opportunity to broker peace. He invited leaders to the coastal resort town of <strong>Bang Saen</strong>, where relaxed, informal negotiations ("sports shirt diplomacy") thawed diplomatic relations and paved the way for a unified regional bloc.
