Life with the Taufer family wasn't always easy. After the death of George's second wife in 1890, Josephine clashed with his third wife and even sought refuge at a convent. After several turbulent years, she returned home under Taufer's plea - revealing early hardships that shaped her resilience.

Meeting José Rizal: From Patient to Partner
</h3>

In 1895, as Taufer's eyesight worsened, Josephine - aware that Dr. <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">José Rizal</a>, then <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/822/dr-jose-rizal-in-dapitan-and-the-katipunan" class="news_link">exiled in Dapitan</a>, was a skilled ophthalmologist - brought him to seek treatment. The  Josephine and her step-father traveled to the Philippines and met Rizal in Dapitan.

Although Rizal couldn't cure Taufer's cataracts, he fell deeply in love with Josephine. Taufer, wary of Rizal's conflicts with the Church and colonial authorities, initially objected - but eventually gave his blessing for Josephine to stay with Rizal in Dapitan.

Life in Exile: Love, Loss, and Common-Law Bond
</h3>
<p>
Josephine and Rizal lived as husband and wife in Dapitan from mid-1895, despite facing opposition from Church authorities who refused them marriage due to Rizal's political standing and Masonic associations. They tragically lost their premature son, Francisco, who died shortly after birth.

A Contested Final Union
</h3>

On December 30, 1896, just hours before his execution, Rizal allegedly reconciled with the Catholic Church and married Josephine in a brief ceremony at <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/978/today-in-philippine-history-march-6-1951-fort-santiago-was-declared-a-national-shrine" class="news_link">Fort Santiago</a>, officiated by Father Vicente Balaguer. While both Josephine and the priest affirmed the union, members of Rizal's family have since disputed its validity, citing the absence of official records.
