In 1938, while still a law student, Ferdinand Marcos was arrested and charged with Nalundasan's murder. He spent his final year of law school behind bars. Remarkably, he was permitted to study for the bar exam from his prison cell.


In 1939, Marcos topped the Philippine Bar Examinations with an unprecedented, near-perfect score of 98.01%. The score was so extraordinarily high that the Supreme Court suspected cheating and forced him to undergo an grueling oral examination. He passed the oral panel with flying colors, and his score was adjusted to 92.35%.

Shortly after, in 1940, Marcos argued his own defense case before the Supreme Court. Led by Associate Justice (and future president) <a href="/articles/3336/jose-p-laurel-leadership-law-and-governance" class="news_link">José P. Laurel</a>, the Supreme Court overturned his lower-court conviction and acquitted him of all charges. Together, they formed a charismatic political duo that captivated the nation.


In 1965, after breaking away from the Liberal Party when President <a href="/kauswagan/articles/645/today-in-philippine-history-september-28-1910-diosdado-p-macapagal-was-born-in-lubao-pampanga" class="news_link">Diosdado Macapagal</a> refused to step aside for him, Marcos ran for the presidency under the Nacionalista Party banner.
