Rather than intimidating the population into submission as colonial military authorities intended, the execution of the Trece Martires de Cavite galvanized public rage across the province, solidifying Cavite as the primary stronghold of the revolution and accelerating the momentum toward Philippine independence in <time datetime="1898">1898</time>.

Historical Context: Cavite on the Brink of Uprising
</h2>

In late <time datetime="1896-08">August 1896</time>, the discovery of the Katipunan secret society in Manila and the subsequent <a href="/articles/3289/cry-of-pugad-lawin-august-23-1896" class="news_link">Cry of Pugad Lawin</a> triggered immediate military response across Central and Southern Luzon. Governor-General Ramón Blanco declared martial law across eight provinces, including Cavite.


Cavite held immense strategic value for Spanish colonial forces:

While town-level uprisings erupted across Cavite between <time datetime="1896-08-31">August 31</time> and early <time datetime="1896-09">September 1896</time>, revolutionary leaders in Cavite Puerto (the walled, fortified capital) sought to strike from within by coordinating an internal assault on Fort San Felipe and the provincial jail.

The Plot, Torture, and Betrayal
</h2>


The plan within Cavite Puerto was multi-pronged and required precise timing:

Jailbreak and Arming: Severino Lapidario (chief warden) and Alfonso de Ocampo (assistant warden) were to release political prisoners from the provincial jail and supply them with arms.

Arsenal Infiltration: Máximo Gregorio and Luís Aguado, key civilian employees within the military war department (Comisaría de Guerra) and Arsenal, were to assist from within.
</li>
<li>
Secret Coordination: Meetings were held disguised as social gatherings at local businesses, including Botica Luciano (pharmacy owned by Victoriano Luciano), José Lallana's tailor shop, and Eugenio Cabezas' watchmaker shop.

Discovery and Interrogation
</h3>

Before the synchronized assault could take place, a local dressmaker named Victoriana Sayat reportedly informed Spanish authorities of suspicious movements. On <time datetime="1896-08-31">August 31, 1896</time>, Spanish military police initiated mass arrests.


Severino Lapidario, Alfonso de Ocampo, and Luís Aguado were among the first apprehended and taken aboard the Spanish warship Ulloa moored in Manila Bay. Held incommunicado, they were subjected to intense physical interrogation and torture.


Overwhelmed by severe torture, Alfonso de Ocampo yielded details of the planned uprising and named his fellow conspirators. Wracked by remorse after realizing he had implicated his comrades, de Ocampo attempted suicide in his cell by slashing his abdomen with a piece of broken glass. Though critically injured, he survived to face trial.

The Four-Hour Trial and Execution
</h2>

On <time datetime="1896-09-11">September 11, 1896</time>, a Spanish military tribunal (Consejo de Guerra) convened inside Fort San Felipe. The proceedings lasted barely four hours. All thirteen defendants were summarily convicted of treason and armed rebellion and sentenced to death by musketry.

The Execution at Plaza de Armas
</h3>

On the morning of <time datetime="1896-09-12">September 12, 1896</time>, the verdict was formally read to the prisoners. At 12:45 PM, they were marched out to the Plaza de Armas, a open drill ground situated between Fort San Felipe and the curtain wall of Cavite Puerto.

Because of his severe self-inflicted wounds, Alfonso de Ocampo was unable to walk and had to be carried to the execution site on a chair.

The thirteen men were blindfolded, forced to kneel, and shot from behind by a firing squad of Spanish soldiers.

Dr. Francisco Masip, the military examining physician, pronounced all thirteen dead at the scene.

Their lifeless bodies were loaded onto three carabao-drawn carts, guarded by armed Spanish soldiers, and hauled to the Catholic Convent Cemetery in the nearby district of Caridad.
