Two days later, on October 23, 1964, Villanueva faced Stepashkin in one of the most controversial finals in Olympic boxing history. Despite what many observers believed was a winning performance, Villanueva lost by a narrow 3-2 split decision. The judges from Italy, Lebanon, and Tunisia voted for the Soviet boxer, while those from the United Arab Republic and Germany scored it for the Filipino. The crowd of 7,000 spectators erupted in boos and catcalls, shouting "Villanueva! Villanueva!" even during the medal ceremony.

A Boxing Prodigy's Journey

Born on March 18, 1945, in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabuyao" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Cabuyao, Laguna</a>, Anthony Villanueva came from boxing royalty. His father, José Luis "Cely" Villanueva, had won a bronze medal in the bantamweight division at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, becoming the Philippines' first Olympic boxing medalist. The elder Villanueva later became a renowned boxing trainer, coaching world champion <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1039/today-in-philippine-history-march-25-1935-flash-elorde-was-born-in-bogo-cebu" class="news_link">Gabriel "Flash" Elorde</a>, who dominated the super featherweight division for seven years.

Anthony's talent was recognized early by businessman and sports enthusiast Eugenio Puyat, who became his sponsor and mentor. Nicknamed "Boy" due to his boyish looks, Villanueva enrolled at Far Eastern University and won his only Philippine amateur title in 1962, which earned him a spot on the national boxing team. At just 17 years old, he had already become a national champion.

The Road to Tokyo

At the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Villanueva demonstrated his exceptional skill and determination through a series of impressive victories:

The semifinal victory over Brown was particularly significant, as the American was considered one of the favorites for gold. Brown had been plagued by a throat infection that forced him into a hospital bed prior to the match, but Villanueva's superior performance left no doubt about the outcome.

The Controversial Final
</h2>

The final bout against Stepashkin remains one of the most disputed decisions in Olympic boxing history. Stepashkin had dominated his way to the finals with four consecutive stoppages, making him the overwhelming favorite. However, the 19-year-old Filipino refused to be intimidated.

Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose "Peping" Cojuangco, who watched the fight ringside, vividly recalled the controversial decision decades later: "Anthony won convincingly. The editor of Ring Magazine (Nat Fleischer) who was seated in front of us was already congratulating us. He kept telling us, "Very nice win. Very nice win". That's why when the decision was announced, the arena was filled with boos from the crowd".

Contemporary reports described a "bloody, fiercely fought featherweight final which the 19-year-old Filipino gamecock carried in the last two rounds". While there were no knockdowns, Villanueva reportedly staggered the Russian several times. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Villanueva demonstrated true sportsmanship by raising Stepashkin's hand after the decision was announced, even though he wept at the injustice.

Historic Achievement and Father-Son Legacy
</h2>

Despite falling short of gold, Villanueva's silver medal represented a historic milestone. He became the first Filipino athlete to win an Olympic silver medal in any sport. Together with his father José, they achieved the remarkable distinction of being the first - and still the only - father-and-son duo to win Olympic medals for the Philippines.

This legacy would not be matched until 1996, when <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onyok_Velasco" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco</a> won a silver medal in the light flyweight division at the Atlanta Olympics, ending a 32-year drought for Philippine Olympic boxing.
