<p>
Estrada was also charged with perjury  for under-reporting his assets in his 1999 statement of assets, liabilities and net worth and for the illegal use of an alias, Jose Velarde, in one of his  bank accounts.
</p>

Speaker Manuel Villar read his referral of the Articles of Impeachment, paving the way for the formal trial of the President by the Senate, where the senators sit as jurors and Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. as presiding officer. 
</p>

The impeachment trial was aborted but he was ousted from office during an uprising in Metro Manila. Soon after his ouster, the same charges were filed against him at the Sandiganbayan.
</p>
<p>
After a lengthy trial, in September 2007 the Sandiganbayan ruled Estrada not guilty of perjury while ruling him as guilty of plunder and sentenced him to reclusión perpetua. President Gloria Arroyo, his then Vice President,  pardoned Erap on October 2007.
