Historical Background

The roots of PAGASA can be traced back to the establishment of the Observatorio Meteorológico de Manila in 1865 by the Jesuit priests. This observatory was the first meteorological service in the Philippines and played a crucial role in weather forecasting and astronomical observations. Over the years, the observatory evolved and expanded its services, eventually becoming the Weather Bureau in 1901.

The Creation of PAGASA

In response to the growing need for a more comprehensive and modern approach to weather forecasting and disaster preparedness, President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/595/today-in-philippine-history-september-11-1917-ferdinand-e-marcos-was-born-in-sarrat-ilocos-norte" class="news_link">Ferdinand E. Marcos</a> reorganized the Weather Bureau into PAGASA on December 8, 1972. The reorganization aimed to provide better protection against natural calamities and to ensure the safety, well-being, and economic security of the Filipino people.
