UN Climate Change Conference Reaches Deal
Delegates from 194 countries at a U.N. climate conference in South Africa have agreed to negotiate an accord that will legally bind countries to take action to slow the pace of climate change.
Under the agreement reached Sunday, industrial countries will have to adhere to the 1997 Kyoto Protocol for at least another five years after it expires in 2012. The protocol legally requires those nations to meet greenhouse gas-emission targets. However, Russia, Japan and Canada have said they will not take part in the Kyoto extension.
The deal early Sunday came nearly two days after the scheduled close of the two-week conference in Durban.
