<p>
This reorganization was later formalized by <a href="https://elibrary.judiciary.gov.ph/thebookshelf/showdocs/2/7121" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Republic Act No. 4695</a>, approved on <time datetime="1966-06-18"><b>June 18, 1966</b></time>, which created the provinces of Benguet, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and Kalinga-Apayao and defined their territories and capitals.

<b>Mountain Province</b>, with Bontoc as the capital, was formed from the Subprovince of Bontoc and nearby municipalities.
</li>
<li>
<b>Benguet</b>, with La Trinidad as the capital, comprised the Subprovince of Benguet and surrounding municipalities long known for mining and highland agriculture.
</li>
<li>
<b>Kalinga-Apayao</b>, with Tabuk as the capital, combined the Subprovinces of Kalinga and Apayao into one province while retaining their subprovincial identities.
</li>
<li>
<b>Ifugao</b>, with Lagawe as the capital, unified the Subprovince of Ifugao and its municipalities, home to the famed rice terraces and rich indigenous culture.

<p>
Before its subdivision, the old Mountain Province had been created in 1908 during the American colonial period, originally encompassing several subprovinces in the Cordillera mountain range. Portions of this larger territory were historically linked to the Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley in earlier administrative arrangements.
