Bonhoeffer believed that a stupid person is more dangerous than an evil one. Evil, according to Bonhoeffer, can be protested, and can be exposed and prevented by either reason or force.


In contrast, protesting against a stupid person, Bonhoeffer pointed out, is useless because reason will fall on deaf ears. Because he (or she) is prone to pre-judgment, a stupid person will mechanically dismiss facts as inconsequential or impertinent.


Moreover, since a stupid person is often easily irritated even by the slightest reasons, he/she is likely to go on a reckless rampage or offensive when he/she is confronted with anything he or she does not agree with. This makes him/her dangerous.


Thus, Bonhoeffer postulated that greater caution is needed when one deals with a stupid individual, than with an evil one.

Bonhoeffer theory appears sound, and it looks applicable to the current political scene in the Philippines.


Leni Robredo is running for president in the May 2022 elections. Since she is seeking the highest elective office of the land, Robredo is fair game for press criticism regarding her alleged qualifications for the public office she seeks.


From the way Robredo has been comporting herself publicly since she became vice president in 2016, she has borne all the badges including that of an incompetent, directionless, indecisive and gullible public official.


As a one-termer congressman (2013-2016), some believe Robredo did nothing substantial in terms of national legislation worthy of any mention.


Robredo's stint as vice president is worse. She merely duplicated the functions of the Department of Social Welfare and Development and visited disaster areas for political publicity purposes.


Twice she was given by President Rodrigo Duterte a chance to work in his administration, and twice Robredo used her office to criticize the President needlessly.


Robredo's views on constitutional issues, public international law and other important matters of national interest and concern are superficial, and appear to be mere general statements she echoed from her handlers. There is also the matter about her having flunked the Bar examination the first time she took it.


During her almost six years in office as Vice President, Robredo had been manifestly directionless in her public views. Her penchant for saying anything to make her look relevant to the public has been very obvious. She even resorted to wearing eyeglasses in public to portray an “intellectual” image.


Robredo's indecisiveness is public knowledge. From the time she became Vice President in 2016 until late 2021, Robredo claimed she had no plans to run for president in 2022. She also made it appear that she may either run for a local post in Bicol, or to retire from politics. In turn, she was drooling for the presidency all along.


The most conspicuous indication of Robredo's indecisiveness is her decision to run for president as an “independent” candidate although she remains the titular head of the publicly despised Liberal Party.


Moreover, the gullible Robredo believes any rumor which conforms to her predilections, and to her biased opinions against President Duterte and Bongbong Marcos, her main rival in the presidential election. No facts or evidence to the contrary will change her biased thinking.
