Early History
</h4>
<p>
San Nicolas was originally named "Baybay", which means "shore" in Tagalog.  It was renamed after the patron saint of sailors, boatmen, and mariners, San Nicolas.

<p>
It was initially home to a diverse population of Mestizos, Sangleys (Filipino-Chinese), and Indios (natives). Its proximity to Binondo and <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros</a> made it an attractive place to live. The district also served as a crucial point for Chinese immigrants, who were directed there before being permitted to settle in other areas.

San Nicolas' most notable features is its collection of well-preserved 19th-century ancestral houses. These structures reflect the wealth and status of their original owners and serve as a window into the district's storied past. Despite the ravages of time and the destruction of World War II, many of these heritage homes remain standing, showcasing the architectural prowess of that era.
