Early Life and Education
</h4>
<p>
Born on June 25, 1867, in Meisic, Tondo, Manila, Masangkay was the youngest of four children of Domingo Masangkay from Batangas and Victoria Rafael from Tanza, Cavite. Despite not having formal education, his intellectual curiosity drove him to read extensively, borrowing books from neighbors. This self-education made him fluent in Spanish and well-informed about the political and social conditions of his time.

Involvement in the Katipunan
</h4>

While working, Masangkay got to know Bonifacio, a well-known young man in his neighborhood. Their mutual patriotic aspirations strengthened their friendship. When Bonifacio, alongside <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1474/today-in-philippine-history-june-27-1863-ladislao-diwa-co-founder-of-the-katipunan-was-born-in-san-roque-cavite" class="news_link">Ladislao Diwa</a> and Teodoro Plata, founded the Katipunan on <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1220/today-in-philippine-history-july-7-1892-the-deportation-of-dr-jose-rizal-to-dapitan-was-made-public-the-katipunan-was-founded" class="news_link">July 7, 1892</a>, Masangkay was among the first to join, along with <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1173/today-in-philippine-history-june-10-1873-restituto-javier-was-born" class="news_link">Restituto Javier</a>, Vicente Molina, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1487/november-1-1849-valentin-diaz-was-born-in-paoay-ilocos-norte" class="news_link">Valentin Diaz</a>, Briccio Pantas, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1336/today-in-philippine-history-november-9-1892-ramon-basa-was-initiated-into-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Roman Basa</a>, and others.

As Bonifacio's adviser, Masangkay was instrumental in turning the Katipunan into a revolutionary organization. He was charged with establishing the Katipunan chapter in Cavite.
