Early Beginnings: The Tamarind Groves
</h3>

The name "Sampaloc" derives from the Tagalog word "sampalok", meaning tamarind (Tamarindus indica). The area was originally characterized by tamarind trees, rice fields, and forests, with small hamlets connected by natural pathways. In 1613, Sampaloc was established as a parish independent of Santa Ana de Sapa, marking its formal beginnings as a settlement. At the time, it included what is now the district of Pandacan, which was separated in 1712.

Spanish Colonial Era: Growth and Development
</h3>
<p>
During the Spanish colonial period, Sampaloc grew as a center of Franciscan spirituality. The Franciscan friars chose the area to build their convent, Nuestra Señora de Loreto, which became a focal point for religious and community activities. The district's boundaries were defined by its role in the Spanish defensive plan for Manila, particularly during the late 19th century when tensions between Spanish and American colonial powers escalated.

The district became a hub for agriculture and trade, with its fertile lands supporting rice and fruit cultivation. The presence of tamarind trees not only gave the area its name but also contributed to its local economy.
