Early Life and Entry into the Philippine Constabulary

Born in Pasacao, Camarines Sur on December 30, 1915, Karingal grew up in a region marked by its rich cultural heritage and turbulent history. In 1933, at the age of 18, he joined the Philippine Constabulary (PC) as a regular patrolman, embarking on a career in law enforcement and military service. When the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3155/the-history-of-the-philippine-military-academy" class="news_link">Philippine Military Academy</a> (PMA) was established in Baguio in 1936, Karingal enrolled as part of its pioneer batch. However, he did not complete the program, leaving after a year. Undeterred, he continued his service in the PC, taking assignments in Ilocos and Nueva Ecija, where he honed his skills in counter-intelligence and covert operations.

World War II: Guerrilla Warfare and Heroism
</h2>

The Japanese occupation of the Philippines in 1942 thrust Karingal into the heart of resistance efforts. As part of President <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1265/today-in-philippine-history-august-19-1878-manuel-quezon-was-born-in-baler-aurora" class="news_link">Manuel Quezon</a>'s Own Guerrillas, he remained behind enemy lines in Manila, conducting espionage and sabotage missions for the Allies. His intelligence-gathering operations extended to the Cordillera region, where he worked alongside Sergeant Jose S. Maniquis to relay critical information to Allied headquarters in Bataan. Captured by Japanese forces in 1942 and tortured at Camp Pangatian in Cabanatuan, Karingal escaped and later joined guerrilla units in his native Bicol, continuing the fight until the war's end in 1945. His bravery earned him the Philippine Medal of Valor, the highest military honor in the Philippines.
