Early Life and Education

<p>
Born on January 29, 1914 in Bulakan, Bulacan, to Marcela Aldana, a food vendor, and Melecio Rodrigo, a horse-carriage driver, Francisco Rodrigo grew up in modest circumstances. He was a proud son of Bulacan, related to Filipino heroes <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/554/today-in-philippine-history-august-30-1850-marcelo-h-del-pilar-was-born-in-cupang-bulacan-bulacan" class="news_link">Marcelo H. del Pilar</a> and <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/749/today-in-philippine-history-november-14-1875-gregorio-del-pilar-was-born-in-bulakan-bulacan" class="news_link">Gregorio del Pilar</a>, whose legacies inspired his nationalism.

Rodrigo's academic journey began at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/2987/history-of-ateneo-de-manila-university" class="news_link">Ateneo de Manila</a> University, where he earned an A.B. degree (1930–1934), followed by a B.S.E. degree from the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2891/miguel-de-benavides-credited-as-founder-of-university-of-santo-tomas" class="news_link">University of Santo Tomas</a> (1934–1935). He completed his Bachelor of Laws at the <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a> in 1938, passing the bar exam that same year. His eloquence shone early as captain of the College Debating Team, foreshadowing his future as a masterful orator.

In 1937, Rodrigo married his childhood sweetheart, Remedios Enriquez, with whom he had six children. Their partnership endured through decades of personal and political challenges, including Rodrigo's imprisonments.

Legal and Literary Beginnings
</h3>

After passing the bar, Rodrigo joined the law firm of Senators Francisco Delgado and <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1261/today-in-philippine-history-august-10-1898-lorenzo-ta-ada-was-born-in-gumaca-quezon" class="news_link">Lorenzo Tañada</a>, co-authoring Philippine Modern Legal Forms and Handbook on the Rules of Court. In 1946, he established the Rodrigo Law Office, cementing his legal career. However, his talents extended beyond law. A gifted playwright, Rodrigo wrote in both English and Tagalog, capturing the Filipino spirit in works like <i>Sa Pula, Sa Puti</i>, a celebrated play about cockfighting, and his Tagalog translation of <i>Cyrano de Bergerac</i> in rhyming couplets. His literary contributions earned him a wide following and the <i>Gawad Soc Rodrigo</i>, a national cultural award named in his honor by the <i>Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino</i> (KWF) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

During World War II, Rodrigo's patriotism surfaced through anti-Japanese activities. Alongside <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3016/the-movement-for-a-free-philippines" class="news_link">Raul Manglapus</a>, he distributed propaganda materials and co-founded Dramatic Philippines, staging plays at the Metropolitan Theatre to uplift Filipino morale.
