Origins: A Response to Crisis

The establishment of La Loma Cemetery was born out of necessity. In <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1708/today-in-philippine-history-june-3-1863-a-strong-earthquake-rocked-manila" class="news_link">1863, a devastating earthquake</a> struck Manila, exacerbating the already strained burial capacity of the city's primary cemetery, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3021/brief-history-of-paco-manila" class="news_link">Paco</a> Cemetery. The cholera epidemic of 1882 further overwhelmed existing burial grounds, prompting Spanish colonial authorities to seek a new site. The task fell to Vicente Carranceja, the Inspector General for Public Works, who, with a budget of 30,000 pesos from the Ayuntamiento (municipal government), collaborated with Marcelo Ramirez to begin the project on August 3, 1864. The cemetery, located in the hilly terrain of La Loma (meaning "the hill"), opened in 1884 under the jurisdiction of Santa Cruz, then part of Binondo.

During the Spanish colonial era, La Loma was an exclusive Catholic burial ground, a consecrated space highly valued by society. Spanish officials wielded this exclusivity as a tool of control, threatening Filipino rebels with denial of burial in Catholic cemeteries like La Loma, which was considered a grave dishonor. This policy underscored the cemetery's role in enforcing colonial social order.
