Lucía Alonso Rizal Mercado was born into a large family of thirteen, consisting of her parents and eleven children - nine sisters and two brothers, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3180/today-in-filipino-history-march-9-1851-paciano-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">Paciano</a> and Jose. <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1190/today-in-philippine-history-june-19-1861-dr-jose-p-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">José</a> would later become the Philippines' national hero. The Rizal family was affluent, owning a hacienda and rice farm leased from the Dominican order in Calamba. Lucía's father, Francisco Mercado, was a diligent tenant farmer, while her mother, Teodora Alonso, was a cultured and educated woman with literary talents and business acumen, known for her Spartan-like fortitude. The family's diverse ethnic heritage and social standing provided Lucía and her siblings with a privileged upbringing, including access to education and a strict but loving household environment.
