Early Life
</h4>
<p>
Francisco was one of the children of Juan Monica Mercado and Cirila Alejandro. His family adopted the additional surname of Rizal in 1849, following Governor-General <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/764/today-in-philippine-history-november-21-1849-claveria-issued-a-decree-to-adopt-a-standardized-records-of-filipino-names-and-surnames" class="news_link">Narciso Clavería</a>'s decree for the adoption of Spanish surnames among Filipinos.

Francisco's patrilineal lineage could be traced back to Fujian, China, through his father's ancestor, Lam-Co, a Hokkien Chinese merchant who immigrated to the Philippines in the late 17th century.

Personal Life
</h4>
<p>
At the age of 30, Francisco married <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1335/today-in-philippine-history-november-9-1827-teodora-alonso-mother-of-dr-jose-rizal-was-born-in-meisik-tondo-manila" class="news_link">Teodora Alonso Realonda</a> on June 28, 1848. The couple resided in Calamba, Laguna, and built a successful business in agriculture. Together, they had 11 children, including Saturnina, Paciano, Trinidad, and the national hero, José.
