The Making of a Character

<p>
Born on October 29, 1852, Narcisa was the third child of <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1125/today-in-philippine-history-may-11-1818-francisco-mercado-was-born-in-bi-an-laguna" class="news_link">Francisco Mercado</a> and <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/1335/today-in-philippine-history-november-9-1827-teodora-alonso-mother-of-dr-jose-rizal-was-born-in-meisik-tondo-manila" class="news_link">Teodora Alonso Realonda</a>. She entered the world into a family that would become one of the most influential in Philippine history, though at the time, they were simply a prosperous family in Calamba, <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3174/the-history-of-laguna-province-philippines" class="news_link">Laguna</a>. Her pet name "Sisa" would later achieve immortality in an unexpected way - as the name of a tragic character in her brother José's revolutionary novel "<a href="https://kahimyang.com/pdf/noli-me-tangere" class="news_link">Noli Me Tangere</a>".

The story behind this literary connection reveals the intimate relationship between the siblings. According to family descendants, a few days before José began writing his groundbreaking novel, Narcisa visited him. During this encounter, he asked for her permission to use her nickname for a character in the book he was about to write. Though he assured her that while Sisa's character would be that of a mother who loses her sanity, she would be portrayed as a loving mother. This gesture speaks to the deep respect and affection José held for his sister, and how the real-life Narcisa embodied the nurturing, maternal qualities that would define the fictional Sisa.

A Life of Service and Sacrifice
</h3>

Narcisa's character was shaped by the values instilled in the Rizal household - education, devotion to family, and service to others. Like her sisters, she was well-educated and possessed musical talents, becoming both a teacher and musician. Her marriage to Antonio Lopez, also a teacher and musician from Morong,  in 1875 created a union bound not only by love but by shared educational and cultural values.

The couple established their home in what is now <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3176/the-history-of-rizal-province" class="news_link">Rizal Province</a>, where they raised eight children. Their family included Emilio, Angelica, Isabella, Quintin, Leoncia, Francisco, Arsenio, Antonio, and Fidela. Among these, their son Antonio would later marry his first cousin Emiliana, the daughter of <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3180/today-in-filipino-history-march-9-1851-paciano-rizal-was-born-in-calamba-laguna" class="news_link">Paciano Rizal</a>, strengthening the bonds within the extended Rizal family network.

Antonio Lopez himself was a remarkable man, described as the son of a priest according to some family accounts. His dedication to his wife's family would prove costly - when Narcisa took in her parents after they were driven from their home in Calamba, Lopez became a target of Spanish persecution. His house was dismantled, their belongings confiscated, and he faced threats of deportation. Yet he stood firm beside his wife and her family, exemplifying the courage that ran through the Rizal bloodline.
