Luz Rosauro Banzon was born on <time datetime="1914-06-25">June 25, 1914</time>, in Balanga, Bataan. She was the daughter of Jose "Oseng Mameng" Banzon and Lucila Tiangco Rosauro. The Banzon family was a prominent clan from Balanga, known for their business enterprises and social standing in the province.

Luz received her education at the Instituto de Mujeres in Manila, a prestigious lay Catholic school for women founded in 1900. The school, established by <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/974/today-in-philippine-history-march-4-1879-rosa-sevilla-was-born-in-tondo-manila" class="news_link">Rosa Sevilla de Alvero</a>, was renowned for preparing young Filipino women to serve both their faith and their country during the American colonial period.

Courtship and Marriage

The love story between Luz Banzon and Ramon Magsaysay began in 1929 when they first met at the Try-Tran Bus Company office in Manila, where Ramon worked as a mechanic and later as general manager. Luz, then only 15 years old, had accompanied her father to collect payment for a bus company the Banzons had sold to Try-Tran.

Their courtship officially began in 1931 when Luz was 16 years old and studying third-year high school at the Instituto de Mujeres. Ramon, known affectionately as "Monching", was an avid and persistent suitor. He would drive Luz and her sister Consuelo to school, deliberately taking longer routes to spend more time with his beloved passenger. His courtship followed traditional Filipino customs, with visits to Luz's home where he showered her with gifts and attention.

Despite Luz's initial reservations about their eight-year age difference, Ramon's distinctive qualities and persistent devotion won her heart. After two and a half years of courtship, they were married on <time datetime="1933-06-10">June 10, 1933</time>, at the Lourdes Church in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3008/the-history-of-intramuros-the-walled-city-manila" class="news_link">Intramuros, Manila</a>. Luz was 18 years old, and Ramon was 25.

Family Life and Children

The Magsaysays built their family life in a simple house on Arellano Street in Singalong, Manila. Their union produced three children: Teresita "Tess" Banzon-Magsaysay (1934-1979), Milagros "Mila" Banzon-Magsaysay (born 1936), and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramon_Magsaysay_Jr." class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer">Ramon "Jun" Banzon-Magsaysay, Jr.</a> (born 1938).

Ramon Magsaysay was remembered by his wife as a devoted "hands-on" father who actively participated in child-rearing. He would play with his children, attend to their needs, and whenever his schedule permitted, would take the family on outings to Luneta Park and downtown Manila for Chinese food. Money was never a significant topic of discussion in their household, as the Magsaysays lived simply within their means.

During World War II, the family faced tremendous challenges. When the Japanese occupation began in December 1941, the Magsaysays were living in San Antonio, Zambales. Ramon joined the 31st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army and later organized the Western Luzon Guerrilla Forces, operating as a guerrilla commander under Colonel Frank Merrill's outfit. The war years tested the family's resilience, with Ramon narrowly evading Japanese capture on multiple occasions while Luz managed the household and cared for their young children.

As First Lady of the Philippines
</h2>

When Ramon Magsaysay was elected the seventh President of the Philippines in November 1953, Luz became First Lady at the age of 39. Her tenure from December 30, 1953, to March 17, 1957, though brief, left an enduring impression on Filipino society.

As the President's consort, Luz Magsaysay was actively involved in numerous socio-civic programs, most notably with the Philippine National Red Cross, where she served as honorary chairwoman for several years. Her work with the Red Cross complemented her husband's administration, which was known for its focus on social welfare and service to the common people.

Unlike some of her predecessors and successors, Luz maintained a remarkably modest lifestyle in <a href="https://kahimyang.com/kauswagan/articles/2851/history-of-malaca-ang-palace-the-official-residence-and-principal-workplace-of-the-president-of-the-philippines" class="news_link">Malacañang Palace</a>. She embodied the same simplicity and humility that characterized her husband's presidency. The couple maintained strict separation between personal and official expenses, with family costs - food, clothing, education - charged against the President's personal salary rather than the official budget.

One anecdote illustrates this commitment to frugality: when Ramon denied Luz permission to purchase new curtains for the Palace (deeming them too extravagant), she mounted a ladder herself to take down the existing curtains for washing. The effort resulted in her hospitalization with severe allergies and respiratory problems from the accumulated dust. Luz later remarked that their time in the Palace felt more like "martyrdom than anything else".
