Before ascending as sultan, Kudarat had already established himself as a formidable warrior and strategist. He orchestrated coordinated attacks on Spanish territories throughout the Visayas. In 1634, in collaboration with the Sultanate of Sulu, his forces successfully invaded and held Spanish-controlled positions in Leyte, Bohol, and Dapitan - crucial strategic strongholds that represented Spanish colonial power in the region.

However, the conflict escalated dramatically in 1637 during the <b>Battle of Lamitan</b>, fought on Basilan island. This battle represented the Spanish determination to strike at the very heart of Maguindanao's power. Instead, he relocated his seat of government to Pulangi and consolidated his resolve for the struggle ahead. This display of resilience demonstrated to his people that their leader would not be broken, even in the face of overwhelming force and religious violence.

Uniting the Divided Sultanates
</h3>

Recognizing that divided Muslim rulers could not stand against Spanish power, Kudarat embarked on a remarkable diplomatic mission. He learned that some datus had collaborated with the Spanish in capturing Lamitan - a betrayal that threatened to fracture Muslim unity entirely. Rather than responding with merely military force, Kudarat convened the Muslim rulers and delivered what Spanish chronicler <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Comb%C3%A9s" class="news-link-ext" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Francisco Combes</a> documented as an inspirational speech.

In this address, Kudarat lectured his fellow datus on the consequences of their betrayal, reminding them of their shared faith, shared enemies, and shared destiny. His words proved remarkably persuasive. The datus heeded his admonitions and returned to the sultanate's fold. More significantly, they ceased their cooperation with the Spanish, refused to continue constructing Spanish fortifications, and took up arms to burn Spanish forts.

By 1642, just five years after Lamitan, another Spanish-Indio force attempted to defeat Kudarat. This time, the sultan was far better prepared, bolstered by the renewed unity of Muslim rulers. His consolidated forces not only defeated the Spanish-Indio battalions but captured their commander - a dramatic reversal that underscored Kudarat's growing military and diplomatic superiority.

Building International Alliances

Beyond his military victories, Kudarat demonstrated sophisticated understanding of international relations and power politics. He successfully forged alliances that extended far beyond Mindanao's shores. In 1656, at approximately seventy years of age, Kudarat declared formal war against Spain. To strengthen his position, he cultivated relationships with rival sultanates throughout Southeast Asia:
