Lineage and the Social Foundations of the Aguinaldo Family

The Aguinaldo family occupied a position of significant influence in Cavite el Viejo, the town now known as Kawit. This area was a hub of agricultural activity and maritime trade, situated strategically along the shores of Manila Bay. Críspulo was born on <time datetime="1863-06-10">June 10, 1863</time>. He was the son of <b>Carlos Aguinaldo</b> and <b>Trinidad Famy</b>, a couple who represented the landed "principalia" class. This social group consisted of families who held local political offices and managed significant estates, acting as intermediaries between the Spanish colonial government and the Filipino population.

The family structure was large and integrated into the local power dynamics of the province. Carlos Aguinaldo had served as a gobernadorcillo, or municipal governor, a role that established the family's political footprint in the region. When Carlos died when the children were still young, Trinidad Famy took over the management of the family's agricultural interests and supported the education of her eight children.

Críspulo was the fifth child in this sequence, placing him in a position of authority over his younger brother Emilio, who was the seventh. This age difference was important in the context of Filipino family values, where the elder sibling often acted as a mentor and protector. In their youth, Críspulo once saved Emilio from drowning when they were bathing in the river behind their house during the feast of San Juan Bautista. Emilio, who did not yet know how to swim, had jumped from a boat and stayed at the bottom of the river until Críspulo noticed and alerted their older brother Benigno.

<h2>
Education and Early Administrative Career
</h2>
<p>
As members of the elite, the Aguinaldo brothers were provided with educational opportunities that were unavailable to the majority of the population. Críspulo attended the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/2884/the-history-of-colegio-de-san-juan-de-letran" class="news_link">Colegio de San Juan de Letran</a> in Manila, one of the most prestigious institutions for young men in the colony. There, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, a qualification that was essential for anyone aspiring to hold higher office within the Spanish administrative system.

Following his studies, Críspulo returned to Cavite el Viejo and entered public service. His career was marked by a steady rise through the local bureaucracy. He served as the Capitan Municipal of Kawit, a title that had replaced "gobernadorcillo" in the later years of Spanish rule. He held this office several times before the outbreak of the 1896 Revolution.

During this pre-revolutionary period, Críspulo was viewed as a disciplined and fair administrator. He maintained a functional, even cordial, relationship with the Spanish authorities, including the Recollect friars who managed the Kawit parish. One anecdote from his early career highlights his commitment to order; he once intervened to prevent a mob of his own townsmen from lynching a Spanish lieutenant, demonstrating a belief in due process that would later be tested by the chaos of war.

The Influence of Freemasonry and the Katipunan
</h2>
<p>
The transition of the Aguinaldo family from colonial officials to revolutionaries was not a sudden event but a process driven by the clandestine intellectual movements of the 1890s. Freemasonry played a critical role in this change. Masonry offered a space where liberal ideas could be discussed away from the oversight of the Catholic Church. Críspulo joined the Pilar Lodge No. 203 in Imus, a secret group that included many of the men who would later lead the revolution in Cavite.

When the Katipunan - the secret society founded by <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3326/andres-bonifacio-life-legacy-and-the-first-president" class="news_link">Andres Bonifacio</a> to seek independence through force - expanded into Cavite, the Aguinaldos were among the first of the local elite to join. They operated under the "Magdalo" council, named after Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of Kawit. While <a href="/articles/2960/baldomero-aguinaldo-a-prominent-figure-in-the-philippine-revolution-was-born-on-february-27-1869-in-cavite-el-viejo-cavite" class="news_link">Baldomero Aguinaldo</a>, a cousin, was the president of the Magdalo council, Críspulo and Emilio became its primary military leaders.

The Revolutionary Outbreak of 1896
</h2>

The revolution began in earnest in Cavite in late August and early September 1896. While Bonifacio's forces in Manila suffered early defeats at San Juan del Monte, the Cavite rebels, led by the Aguinaldos, secured a series of victories that turned the province into the primary stronghold of the rebellion.

The Battle of Binakayan
</h3>
<p>
Críspulo's first major test as a revolutionary commander came during the Battle of Binakayan in November 1896. This engagement is considered the first significant victory of Filipino forces against a disciplined Spanish army. <b>Governor-General Ramon Blanco</b> had launched a massive naval and land assault to reclaim the fortifications in Kawit and Noveleta.

<p>
During this battle, Críspulo was assigned to the rear position, supporting the forces of Baldomero Aguinaldo. Their objective was to prevent Spanish marines from flanking the main revolutionary army led by Emilio. The Filipino irregulars, though armed mostly with bolos and only a few rifles, managed to outmaneuver the Spanish troops. The victory at Binakayan not only saved the rebellion in Cavite but also elevated the status of the Aguinaldo brothers as national figures.

Offensives in Morong
</h3>
<p>
Encouraged by the success in Cavite, Críspulo led insurgent forces into the neighboring province of Morong (now Rizal). He conducted a series of successful raids against Spanish positions in Muntinlupa, Taguig, and Pateros. These operations were intended to expand the territory of the revolution and put pressure on the Spanish capital in Manila. After two days of fierce fighting in these areas, the troops retired to Cavite to reorganize, as the Spanish government began mobilizing a massive counter-offensive.

The 1897 Spanish Offensive and the Defense of Dasmariñas
</h2>
<p>
By the beginning of 1897, the Spanish government had replaced Governor-General Blanco with <a href="https://kahimyang.com/articles/3246/rizals-executioner-camilo-garcia-de-polaviejas-colonial-legacy-in-the-philippines" class="news_link">Camilo de Polavieja</a>, who promised a more aggressive approach to the rebellion. Polavieja deployed the division of <b>General José de Lachambre</b>, a force of nearly 23,000 men equipped with modern artillery and Mauser rifles.   
</p>
<p>
The Spanish offensive began in mid-February 1897, aiming to retake the key towns of Cavite. Críspulo joined Emilio's staff in the defense of Dasmariñas, a town that served as the gateway to the rebel headquarters in Imus. The fighting in Dasmariñas was among the most brutal of the war. Despite a spirited defense, the Filipino forces were forced to evacuate after days of continuous combat.

<p>
It was during the retreat from Dasmariñas toward the Salitran estate house that Críspulo displayed his remarkable physical courage. He led a mixed group of riflemen and bolomen in hand-to-hand combat against a Spanish column. In the chaos of this engagement, Críspulo personally encountered and killed the Spanish commander, <b>General Antonio Zabala</b>. While this was a significant achievement, it could not stop the momentum of the Spanish advance, which continued to push toward the strategic bottleneck of Pasong Santol.
