The battle ended in a victory for the Bicolano forces. An irregular Filipino detachment of 80 to 100 men defeated a Spanish force of roughly 150 troops. Spanish casualties included 76 soldiers killed and 72 captured, along with the loss of 72 service rifles and military equipment. The Bicolano fighters sustained 14 killed and 37 wounded. As the first major battle of the Philippine Revolution fought on the Bicol mainland, the encounter established local revolutionary control, disrupted Spanish military movement, and encouraged widespread participation in the independence movement across Albay province.

Historical Background and Local Mobilization
</h2>
<p>
The town of Camalig was officially established by Franciscan missionaries in 1579, making it one of the earliest colonial settlements in Albay. The name of the town comes from kamalig, a Bicolano word for grass-roofed, wall-less storage huts used by local farmers to preserve harvested crops. Spanish explorers under Captain Luis Enriquez de Guzman first observed these structures during an inland scouting expedition in 1569. Over the centuries, Camalig developed into a significant agricultural settlement near the foot of Mayon Volcano.

By early 1898, anti-colonial sentiment had spread from Central Luzon into the Bicol Peninsula. Local revolutionary networks grew under the organizational structure of the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/906/about-the-katipunan" class="news_link">Katipunan</a>. General Vito Belarmino was appointed Zone Commander of the Katipunan forces for the Bicol Region. At the same time, Glicerio Delgado began organizing armed insurgents from a base in the mountains of Guinobatan.

In the town of Guinobatan, Simeón Ola - a former philosophy student at the Holy Rosary Minor Seminary - used his position as teniente de cuadrillos (town police lieutenant) and his working relationship with the local parish priest, Father Carlos Cabido, to secretly acquire firearms and recruit fighters. Ola also coordinated with Sergeant Loame, a local jail warden, to free 93 prisoners, who were promptly recruited into the revolutionary army. These former prisoners and local volunteers formed the core irregular unit that joined Belarmino and Delgado at Camalig.

The two sides engaged at Camalig possessed contrasting military capabilities, weapons, and command structures. The Spanish force consisted of trained light infantry personnel operating as a defensive garrison and counter-insurgency column. The Bicolano force comprised irregular infantry, local volunteers, and newly recruited fighters who relied on knowledge of the local terrain to offset their initial lack of modern firearms.

On <time datetime="1898-04-02">April 2, 1898</time>, Bicolano forces positioned themselves along key terrain features in Camalig to intercept the Spanish light infantry detachment. Utilizing ambush tactics, the Bicolano irregulars engaged the Spanish column at close range. This sudden assault prevented the Spanish troops from forming an organized defensive perimeter or using their superior marksmanship training effectively.

The high density of vegetation and familiar geography allowed the Bicolano fighters to encircle the Spanish formation. The engagement resulted in 76 Spanish deaths. As the Spanish line collapsed, 72 light infantrymen surrendered to the Bicolano command. The Bicolano forces sustained 51 total casualties, consisting of 14 killed and 37 wounded.
