Early Life and Education
</h2>


Carmen Camacho was born into an intellectually active family; her father, Dr. Raymundo O. Camacho, was a physician and local politician, and her mother was Milagros Yango. Exposed early to scientific enquiry through her father's medical practice, she pursued higher education at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology in <time datetime="1934">1934</time>. She stayed on afterward as a student assistant in the university's Department of Zoology, a modest first foothold in the field that would define her career.



Not long after, she was awarded a Barbour scholarship to continue her studies at the University of Michigan, where she came under the influence of the helminthologist George R. La Rue - a formative mentorship that steered her toward the study of parasitic worms. She completed her Master of Science in Zoology at Michigan in <time datetime="1937">1937</time> before returning home.


In <time datetime="1935">1935</time>, she married <a href="/kauswagan/articles/566/today-in-philippine-history-september-2-1901gregorio-tiongson-velasquez-was-born-in-calumpit-bulacan" class="news_link">Gregorio T. Velasquez</a>, a fellow scientist who was then building his own career studying Philippine algae. It would become one of the more remarkable scientific partnerships in Philippine academic history - the couple raised three daughters, Julieta, Emperatriz, and Milagros Elena, while each pursued research that would eventually earn them the country's highest scientific honor.

Building a Discipline from Scratch
</h2>

Velasquez returned to the University of the Philippines in <time datetime="1939">1939</time> to teach zoology. In <time datetime="1951">1951</time>, she published a paper describing a new parasitic copepod species, an early sign of the taxonomic work that would come to define her career. In <time datetime="1954">1954</time>, she completed her PhD in Parasitology at UP - the first degree of its kind ever conferred by the university - with a dissertation on the spread and resistance of Ascaris eggs in the Philippines, a soil-transmitted parasite of major public health concern.


Her standing in the field grew quickly. She joined the American Society of Parasitologists in <time datetime="1958">1958</time> and was twice awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, for <time datetime="1957">1957</time>–<time datetime="1958">1958</time> and again in <time datetime="1963">1963</time> - a rare distinction for a Filipino scientist at the time. She later chaired the UP Department of Zoology from <time datetime="1973">1973</time> to <time datetime="1976">1976</time> and held its Professional Chair in Zoology from <time datetime="1973">1973</time> to <time datetime="1977">1977</time>, teaching both parasitology and general zoology to generations of students.

A Life's Work in Fish Parasites
</h2>

Velasquez's research output was extraordinary in both volume and impact: more than 70 publications on the life cycles and taxonomy of parasitic worms, spanning heterophyid trematodes, the Capsalidae family, and the characteristics of tapeworms (Cestoda). Over the course of her career she discovered 32 new species and an entirely new genus of digenetic trematodes, drawn from 13 species of fish found nowhere else but the Philippines.


Crucially, her work wasn't purely academic. She studied the parasites living in the fish that make up the backbone of Filipino cuisine - tilapia, giant trevally, maya-maya, milkfish, and the lobed river mullet - connecting taxonomy directly to food safety and public health in an archipelago where fish is a dietary staple.


Her most consequential discovery came in <time datetime="1968">1968</time>, when she identified and described Capillaria philippinensis, a parasitic nematode found in the intestines of a man from Ilocos Sur. The species she described was responsible for intestinal capillariasis, a disease that had been quietly devastating communities in northern Luzon. Identifying the parasite behind it was a critical step toward understanding, treating, and eventually controlling the illness - arguably her single greatest contribution to Philippine public health.


In <time datetime="1975">1975</time>, she published Digenetic Trematodes of Philippine Fishes, the first monograph ever devoted to fish parasitology in Southeast Asia. It became - and remains - a standard reference for researchers in aquaculture and fisheries management across the region.

Later Career and Recognition
</h2>

Velasquez retired from the UP Department of Zoology in <time datetime="1978">1978</time> and was named Professor Emeritus of Zoology the following year. Retirement did not slow her down: she built a laboratory in her own home so she could continue her research uninterrupted. She went on to serve as a visiting professor at the University of Maryland, edited the Philippine Science Encyclopedia and the Asian Fisheries Science Journal, and served on the executive council of the newly formed National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), advising the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development.


Her honors accumulated steadily over the decades: the Distinguished Service Medal and Honorary Diploma of the Republic of the Philippines (<time datetime="1965">1965</time>); the National Science Development Board's Award for Outstanding Publications (<time datetime="1972">1972</time> and <time datetime="1973">1973</time>); the UP Alumni Association Professional Award (<time datetime="1973">1973</time>); recognition as an Outstanding Woman in Science in the Philippines at the UNESCO Biennial Conference (<time datetime="1975">1975</time>); and the Fisheries Research Society Award (<time datetime="1979">1979</time>). In <time datetime="1983">1983</time>, President Ferdinand Marcos conferred on her the title of National Scientist of the Philippines - making her only the second woman to receive the country's highest scientific honor, one year after her husband, phycologist Gregorio T. Velasquez, received the same distinction for his own pioneering work on Philippine algae.


Carmen Camacho Velasquez died on <time datetime="1994-10-16">October 16, 1994</time>, in <a href="/articles/2989/the-historical-journey-of-quezon-city" class="news_link">Quezon City</a>, at the age of 81. She was laid to rest at the <a href="/articles/3269/the-history-of-libingan-ng-mga-bayani" class="news_link">Libingan ng mga Bayani</a> in Taguig.
