Born María Reyes Agoncillo on February 15, 1879, in the picturesque heritage town of Taal, Batangas, she entered the world during the volatile closing decades of the Spanish colonial regime. Her parents were <b>Flaviano Agoncillo y Encarnación</b> and <b>Michaela Reyes</b>. She belonged to the highly affluent, intellectual, and deeply patriotic Agoncillo clan of Batangas - a family whose surname is permanently etched into the fabric of Philippine independence.

Most notably, María was the niece of Don <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1148/today-in-philippine-history-may-26-1859-felipe-agoncillo-was-born-in-taal-batangas" class="news_link">Felipe Agoncillo</a>, the brilliant lawyer and pioneering diplomat who famously represented the First Philippine Republic abroad. Don Felipe traveled to Paris and Washington, D.C., in a valiant effort to block foreign ratification of the 1898 Treaty of Paris and secure international recognition for Filipino sovereignty. Her family was also closely connected to <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1637/today-in-philippine-history-june-24-1859-marcela-agoncillo-was-born-in-taal-batangas" class="news_link">Marcela Mariño de Agoncillo</a>, the "Mother of the Philippine Flag" who manually sewed the country's first official banner in Hong Kong. General Emilio Aguinaldo's first wife, Doña Hilaria del Rosario, passed away from leprosy in 1921. For nine years, the General lived as a widower, dedicating his time to the welfare of veteran revolutionists and steering his personal legacy through the American colonial administration.

In 1930, the 61-year-old former President sought the hand of the 51-year-old María Agoncillo. On July 14, 1930, the couple was officially wed. The choice of venue was intensely deliberate and deeply symbolic: the historic Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan. It was within this sacred sanctuary that the Malolos Congress had met, the Malolos Constitution was drafted, and the First Philippine Republic was formally inaugurated in 1899 under Aguinaldo's presidency. By marrying there, the union of Aguinaldo and Agoncillo served as a romantic and historical reaffirmation of the birth of the Filipino nation, blending the revolutionary military leadership of Cavite with the diplomatic aristocracy of Batangas.

For the next 33 years, Doña María remained General Aguinaldo's constant companion, advisor, and caregiver. Together, they navigated several turbulent and transformative eras of modern Philippine history. They witnessed the transition into the Philippine Commonwealth under <a href="/articles/3338/manuel-l-quezon-personal-history-and-national-leadership" class="news_link">Manuel L. Quezon</a>, endured the dark and perilous years of the Japanese Occupation during World War II, and celebrated the dawn of the fully independent Third Philippine Republic after the war.

As the matriarch of the Aguinaldo Mansion in Kawit, Cavite, Doña María managed the sprawling household with immaculate hospitality. She hosted visiting dignitaries, international historians, and generations of politicians who sought the counsel of the aging General.

One of the most profound milestones of her later years occurred in May 1962. Recognizing a lifelong advocacy championed by General Aguinaldo, President <a href="/kauswagan/articles/645/today-in-philippine-history-september-28-1910-diosdado-p-macapagal-was-born-in-lubao-pampanga" class="news_link">Diosdado Macapagal</a> signed an executive decree moving the official celebration of Philippine Independence Day from July 4 (the day the United States granted independence in 1946) to June 12 - the exact date in 1898 when Aguinaldo had first proclaimed the country's independence from Spain from his balcony in Kawit. Doña María stood proudly by her husband's side to witness this monumental correction of Philippine history, ensuring that his revolutionary vision was fully vindicated by the state before her passing.
