Rotor's unique intellect was obvious early on at the <a href="/kauswagan/articles/1188/today-in-philippine-history-june-18-1908-the-university-of-the-philippines-was-established" class="news_link">University of the Philippines</a> (UP). Instead of choosing between his passions, he enrolled in two completely different intensive paths simultaneously. He graduated at the same time with a degree from the <b>UP Conservatory of Music</b> and a medical degree from the <b>UP College of Medicine</b>.

In his youth, his musical training allowed him to work as a live piano player for silent films in Manila theaters. Later on, he became an accomplished music critic, though medicine eventually became his primary profession. After UP, he traveled to the United States to complete his postgraduate medical training at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Rotor's name is permanently etched into global medical textbooks. In 1948, along with his colleagues, he published a groundbreaking paper tracking a specific type of hereditary liver disorder in Filipino families. Today, this rare, benign form of jaundice - characterized by non-hemolytic elevated bilirubin without any itching - is known worldwide as <b>Rotor Syndrome</b>.
