However, immediately before the surrender was to occur the Pulajanes leader, Nasario Aguilar, signaled and some made a bolo rush, others immediately opened fire.  Judge Lominger and a district school inspector, which was among the Curry party,  escaped in one direction and Governor Curry in another, swimming the river and escaping in the brush.

16 constabulary were killed, many were wounded and missing, and some guns were also lost to the Pulajanes.  Governor Curry who went missing  for 30 hours,  was later found in a road camp.

The Pulajanes lost 30 of their men.

In his report,  Curry said the following:

Had a hard fight in which Captain Jones of the constabulary lost half of his command, but gained a magnificent victory in the face of overwhelming odds. The Pulajanes, under a flag of truce, and while promising to surrender immediately opened fire, charging the constabulary. The leader of the Pulajanes first ordered his men to wipe out the constabulary and then to capture the Governor and the other Americans.

The constabulary did splendidly, though the inferior fire arms, which were minus bayonets, placed them (the Pulajanes) at a disadvantage.

George Curry, the newly appointed Governor of Samar Island, earlier applied for leave of absence, withdrew his application to finish the pacification.
