The Groom's Roots: The Rise of the Mercados
</h2>

Don Francisco (born <time datetime="1818-05-11">May 11, 1818</time>, in Biñan, Laguna) came from a line of self-made agrarian entrepreneurs. His great-grandfather, Domingo Lam-co, was a Chinese immigrant from Zhangzhou, Fujian, who arrived in Manila in the late 17th century. To escape the fierce anti-Chinese prejudice of the Spanish regime, Lam-co changed the family name to Mercado (Spanish for "market") in 1731 - a nod to his merchant roots.

By the time Francisco was a young man, the family had transitioned from trading to agriculture. Recognizing a massive economic opening, Francisco moved from Biñan to Calamba to join his sisters. He became an inquilino (a tenant-manager or leaseholder) of the vast Hacienda de Calamba, which was owned by the Dominican religious order.

Far from a poor peasant, an inquilino acted as a middleman. Francisco leased huge tracts of land from the friars, hired local subtenants (kasamas) to do the physical farming, and turned Calamba into a powerhouse for cash crops like sugar, rice, and corn.

The Bride's Roots: The Intellectual Elite of Manila

Doña Teodora (born <time datetime="1827-11-09">November 9, 1827</time>) brought immense cultural and political capital to the marriage. She was born in Meisik, Tondo, Manila, to a family of high-ranking professionals and intellectuals.

Her father, Lorenzo Alberto Alonso, was a wealthy, Spanish-speaking engineer, and her mother, Brigida de Quintos, came from a prominent family of lawyers. Remarkably for the era, Teodora's uncle, Jose Florentino, was even elected as a Philippine delegate to the Spanish Cortes (the legislature in Spain).

Teodora herself was exceptionally well-educated, having studied at the prestigious Colegio de Santa Rosa in Manila. She was highly literate, fluent in Spanish, remarkably skilled in mathematics, and deeply well-read in classic literature. Jose Rizal would later write that his mother knew more literature and mathematics than he did, and it was she who taught him how to read, write, and pray.
