He traded his law books for a revolver and a bolo, joining the <b class="lt-bold">Kataas-taasang, Kagalang-galang na Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan</b> (KKK).

The most famous anecdote illustrating their relationship concerns the drafting of the Katipunan's code of conduct. Bonifacio had written a "Decalogue" (Ten Commandments of the Katipunan). Jacinto, independently, wrote a draft called the Kartilya. When Bonifacio read Jacinto's draft, he realized it was superior in style, depth, and moral resonance. In a rare act of humility for a revolutionary leader, Bonifacio withdrew his own writing and adopted Jacinto's Kartilya as the official primer of the organization. Jacinto was obliged to source these types, likely from contacts in other printing houses or by improvising.

Jacinto became the editor of the newspaper Kalayaan (Freedom). He wrote under the pen name "Dimasilaw" (Unblinding Light). To mislead the Spanish authorities, the masthead humorously and strategically listed Yokohama, Japan, as the place of publication and the great propagandist Marcelo H. del Pilar (who was in Spain) as the editor.

The first issue was distributed in March 1896. The effect was electric. The paper passed from hand to hand, read aloud in secret gatherings. It contained articles that spoke directly to the suffering of the people in their own language. Within months, the membership of the Katipunan skyrocketed from 300 to an estimated 30,000. Jacinto proved that the pen was the recruitment tool of the sword.
