Josephine Bracken was born on August 9, 1876, at Victoria Barracks in Hong Kong, to Corporal James Bracken, an Irish soldier in the British Army, and his wife Elizabeth Jane McBride. Tragically, her mother passed away shortly after childbirth, and as a military man juggling responsibilities, her father entrusted her to the care of her godfather, George Taufer, an American engineer with the Hong Kong Fire Department.
On August 10, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães), the Portuguese explorer sailing under the Spanish crown, embarked on one of history's most momentous voyages. Leading a fleet of five ships carrying approximately 270 men, Magellan departed from Seville down the Guadalquivir River, beginning what would become the first circumnavigation of the globe.
On August 10, 1898, Felipe Agoncillo was ordered to go to the United States as representative of the Filipino Revolutionary Government. A member of the Executive body of the Revolutionary junta based in Hongkong, Agoncillo was to represent the Philippines in the peace conference in Paris between the United States and Spain.
On August 10, 1898, Lorenzo Martinez Tañada, widely regarded as the longest-serving senator in Philippine history and a staunch nationalist, was born in the town of Gumaca, then part of Tayabas province (now Quezon), Philippines. Known affectionately as "Ka Tanny," Tañada dedicated his life to public service, civil liberties, and the fight for Philippine sovereignty, earning him the title of the "Grand Old Man of Philippine Politics"
